Farmers to hold tractor rally, protests on R-Day

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) is a coalition of farmers’ outfits in India that will hold a tractor rally and massive protest across the state of Odisha on Republic Day (January 26th) demanding enactment of a law guaranteeing minimum support price (MSP) of agriculture produce and waiver of farm loans. This movement will be part of SKM’s nationwide protest, which SKM national leader Hannan Mollah discussed with representatives of farmer outfits and trade union leaders from Odisha here on Friday. Mollah said the center is yet to fulfil any of the promises made to the SKM in a letter issued on December 9th, 2021, on the basis of which the farm movement was suspended. The SKM has raised eight major demands related to farmers, apart from legal guaranty for MSP and loan waiver. They are: the government to roll back the electricity amendment bill; to withdraw the false cases registered against the agitating farmers; to bring a farmercentric crop insurance scheme to help peasants who face crop loss due to flood, drought, cyclone, unseasonal rain, animal and pest attacks; and to pay proper insurance amount to the farmers. The SKM also plans to raise statespecific farmer issues during the protest.
